PSP currently has 2 designs, the 1st generation which is labeled as PSP fat / phat and the second generation which is PSP slim.
Here’s the run on the differences on both systems:
1. PSP fat has an infrared port unlike the PSP slim
2. PSP fat has a metal chassis unlike the PSP slim (that makes the PSP slim also light)
3. PSP slim has a higher and louder speaker compared to PSP fat because of the speaker’s placement
4. PSP fat has a thicker LCD panel compared to PSP slim
5. PSP slim has a higher RAM than PSP fat (Slim has 64mb , Fat has 32mb) so loading of games in psp slim is much faster
6. PSP slim has no lock latch on the UMD drive cover unlike PSP fat
7. PSP slim’s WiFi switch replaced the lock latch location of UMD (PSP fat’s lock is supposed to be there)
8. in terms of button feedback, PSP slim’s controls are more responsive
9. PSP slim’s battery usage is more efficient compared to that of PSP fat.
10. PSP slim can accept the 8gb MSDUO out of the box, PSP fat needs to be upgraded to version 2.XX above to accept the 8gb MSDUO
11. PSP fat has 2 motherboard types, both of which can be implanted with a modchip to downgrade the unit, similar to a Pandora battery the PSP slim’s motherboard is very different to the fat.
12. PSP fat’s battery can fit on the PSP slim but without the battery cover…. this doubles the battery life of the PSP slim, meaning more playing time
13. when playing games via Ad-Hoc (ex. Tekken DR), PSP slim vs. PSP fat is often discouraged because of lag issues. however, PSP slim vs. PSP slim, lag issues are minimized
