New movies are often compared to old ones. In most cases, they don?t measure up. This is not because old movies are better than old ones. I?m not trying to make that point ? it will depend on the movie. I think the reason new movies don?t compare to old ones when compared is because anything a new movie is being compared to will be legendary. For example, you wouldn?t want to compare a new comedy to Nothing But Trouble. Half the population doesn?t even know what Nothing But Trouble Is. In case you?re not aware, it?s better that way. This all brings me to my point (thanks for hanging in there). Paranormal Activity was compared to The Blair Witch Project. This was a mistake.
Why was it a mistake? Because The Blair Witch Project ? for good or bad reasons ? was a unique experience. Regardless of the reason, people were shocked by the movie. Paranormal Activity was a Sundance Film that nobody really knew about. When it came to the big screen, people were impressed. Unfortunately, this also led to the ads blowing it out of proportion, which led to a lot of disappointment for those who saw it late. I was one of those people.
I caught Paranormal Activity on Dstar the other night. It started out as one of the most boring movies I had ever seen in my life. Just as I was about to shut it off, it got better. So, if this happens to you, hang in there. Obviously, I don?t feel it was as good, or as scary, as The Blair Witch Project, but that?s just a matter of taste. The acting was impressive. And if you want to get the most out of the movie, you have to watch it alone with the lights out. Overall, I would say it was worth watching, but nothing extraordinary.
