With AMD’s HD 6000 series of video cards closing in, one would expect NVIDIA to also be preparing a suitable counter measure, and it seems that the company actually may be doing just that with a certain supposedly upcoming high-end Fermi card. As some may remember, the GeForce GTX 480 actually came out with a lower number of CUDA cores than originally intended. The reason given for this was the still ongoing problems with TSMC’s 40nm process, issues that have since been resolved, fortunately.
Recently, however, a certain rumor emerged stating that NVIDIA is also developing a new video card, one stronger than the GTX 480. Said board will be known as GeForce GTX 580 and will be superior to the currently strongest GF100 card in multiple ways. Being powered by what will supposedly be known as the GF110 graphics processor, the card will have 512 CUDA cores, as well as 128 texture units, which is a nice jump from the GTX 480′s 60 TMUs.
The board will reportedly also include a solid memory capacity, 2 GB of GDDR5 to be exact, while the memory interface itself will be of 512 bits. There was also mention of a mini HDMI video output, as well as a pair of DVI ports, while the whole creature will be kept running by one 6-pin and one 8-pin PCI Express power connector.
