Unveiling newer and innovative ideas, Seagate has made a veritable habit of causing jaws to drop by to say the least storage solutions. The most recent, and clear, example of this is the external hard drive with a capacity of no less than 3TB. Still, the California-based hardware maker appears to have decided to let things settle down somewhat. As such, instead of bringing out some new, massive revelation, it made available the Black Armor NAS 400.

The BlackArmor NAS 400, essentially, is a 4-bay network-attached storage device meant for home and small office networks. Granted, there are already a slew of such solutions on the market. Nevertheless, Seagate intends to play on the desire for control and customizability that customers possess. This is why it doesn’t offer the hard drives needed to equip it with.

The product measures 207 (H) x 160 (W) x 269 (L) mm and supports, as already mentioned, up to four hard disks. Said HDDs can be configured in a number of ways, not only RAID 0, 1, 5 or 10, but also in JBOD. Empty, it has a weight of 4kg. It should probably be noted that the bays themselves are hot swappable, which means that any of the four storage units will be changeable without the others being affected, in case of failure. Furthermore, Seagate threw in hardware-based encryption, for secure remote access. This is also equipped with four USB 2.0 connectors, a pair of Gigabit Ethernet ports and supports centralization of data files, as well as full system recovery.

Over the past couple of days, the PC maker brought out DDR3-enabled netbooks, ultrathin and entertainment laptops and even 3D-ready machines. All that was left, in fact, was the value segment of the notebook front, and the company was quite quick in addressing its needs with its Satellite L and C lines.

Toshiba didn’t just offer one or two devices, of course. In fact, it prepared six distinct machines, each with processing, memory, graphics, storage and connectivity options carefully balanced in order to reach affordable price points when they finally start shipping (June 20). The 14-inch C645 and 15.6-inch C655, with a starting price of $450, are based on Intel or AMD low-cost chips and boast 250GB or 320GB HDDs, DDR3 memory, integrated graphics, a DVD Super multi Drive, WiFi and Ethernet.

Whereas Satellite L line is more extensive, with four notebooks eager to land orders. They are the 13-inch Satellite L635, 14-inch L645, 15.6-inch L655 and 17.3-inch L675. All these newcomers feature Intel Core or AMD Turion II/Athlon II/Phenom II chips, as well as up to 4GB of DDR3, a DVD drive, up to 500GB storage, WiFi and webcams, among other things. Finally, they have starting price tags of of $620, $516, $570 and $600, respectively, and, like the C645 and C655, 720p LED-backlit displays.

The 4GB USB Flash Drive Cufflinks developed by Ravi Ratan are an example of what can happen when spy movies and hardware development milestones come together and join hands. Essentially, they are a pair of 2GB drives disguised as cufflinks (obviously), for easy carrying of any work-related or otherwise needed data at all times. All allusions to James Bond or any other spy films aside, these products are sold in gunmetal, silver and gold finishes and can even be engraved, for an extra dosage of personalization.

The USB Cufflinks have a price tag of $195 per pair, with an extra $8 required in case one wants something engraved upon them. For the latter option, purchasers will have to wait about a week longer before actually receiving their order. Up to 8 characters can be inscribed and will likely contribute to the recoverability of the cufflinks, should they be misplaced.

Apple has unveiled a redesign of its popular iPhone handset. The revamped gadget has a stainless steel case, two cameras, and improved display and is 24% thinner than the most recent version. They also highlighted key new additions such as FaceTime video calling, the all-new Retina Display with a remarkable 960-by-640 resolution in a 3.5-inch screen, HD video recording, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, iBooks, iMovie applications and more.

“iPhone 4 is the biggest leap since the original iPhone,” Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, said. “FaceTime video calling sets a new standard for mobile communication, and our new Retina display is the highest resolution display ever in a phone, with text looking like it does on a fine printed page. We have been dreaming about both of these breakthroughs for decades.”

Weighing in on the 3.5-inch Retina display, Apple claims it has 960 x 640 pixels – four times as many pixels as the iPhone 3GS, and 78 percent of the pixels on an iPad, for comparison. Going great with the improved screen is the improved camera with 5-megapixel autofocus, 5x digital zoom, a backside illuminated sensor, and built-in LED flash for shooting in dark environments. The built-in Photos app has also been enhanced, while users will be able to enhance and edit the videos taken with iPhone 4 thanks to the new iMovie app.

For those who like to play a lot of games on their iPhone, Cupertino has confirmed the addition of a 3-axis gyro. This combines with the accelerometer, providing 6-axis motion sensing – up and down, side to side, forward and backward and pitch and roll –, making it perfect for gaming, Apple says.

Also among yesterday’s announcements, Apple revealed it had decided to change the iPhone OS dubbing to iOS. iOS 4 is touted by Apple as “the newest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system.” The new software is set to deliver over 100 new features, including Multitasking, Folders, enhanced Mail, deeper Enterprise support, Game Center and Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform when it arrives later this month. iOS 4 is fully supported on iPhone 3GS, iPod touch third generation and iPad, and partially supported on older hardware such as the iPhone 3G.

Tablets alone have been built in not just Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips, but also NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 SoC and Intel’s Moorestown CPU. Even in the wake of such products, there is room for certain new/unusual ideas to take form. On the vide front, Galaxy has already taken care of this field with its dual-GPU GTX 480. Coming to do something similar on the laptop front, Gateway has brought forth a new use for backlights.

Among the products currently exhibited at Galaxy’s booth are two less than ordinary laptops by the names of EC39C and ID49C08u. As far as their insides go, they aren’t all that revolutionary. The ID49C08u, for instance, is powered by an Intel Core i5 central processing unit paired with 4GB of memory, a hard disk drive with 500GB of storage space and an optical disk unit. The EC39C uses the NVIDIA Optimus to switch between the integrated graphics and the GeForce 310M discrete GPU, all the while leaving the computing to a Core i5 ULV.

What makes these two machines stand out is the ability of the touchpads to light up when utilized. This is a step away from the backlit-keyboards that have started to show up on higher-end or travel-intended machines. Basically, the touchpads, with integrated mouse buttons, glow blue when touched. Other design upsides of the notebooks include chiclet keyboards and a dedicated social networking key.
