Windows 7 going good in market share

Windows Vista is no longer the second most used operating system worldwide as of the end of July 2010. According to statistics released by Net Applications, Windows 7 is now runner up to Windows XP having grown to a market share of 14.46%, which gives it a small lead over Vista which dipped to 14.34%.

Windows 7 jumped from 13.70% market share in June 2010 to 14.46% in July, and at least taking into consideration information from Microsoft, the operating system shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, quite to the contrary, the Redmond company revealed that in the last month alone sales of Windows 7 have accelerated past the 7 copies sold per second. It appears that the software giant managed to push as much as 10 copies of Windows 7 per second, and has already sold no less than 175 million licenses of the platform worldwide.

Meanwhile Windows Vista took a dive, and is now accounting only for 14.34% of the OS market, approximately at the same level as in November 2008, almost two years after general availability. Windows XP’s market share is also eroding rapidly, down to just 61.87% from 62.43% in the previous month. Back in October 2009, when Windows 7 hit store shelves, XP owned over 70% of the operating system market, but together with Vista, continually lost users to the latest iteration of the Windows client.

Finally, Yahoo has just released the final version of its new instant messenger client Yahoo Messenger 10.0.0.1102. The latest version comes after a beta period of more than two months. The Yahoo development team has been working on getting it to release quality and the final build comes with a lot of bug fixes and stability-related updates. Yahoo also noted that the latest version was fully compatible with the newly launched Windows 7.

The Yahoo Messenger 10 is the next evolutionary step for the IM client, borrowing more than a few things from the previous Yahoo Messenger 9, but also incorporating a couple of big new features. The most touted one is the one-on-one video call feature introduced with the first beta version. It allows users to have real video calls with video and audio sync in real time.

It builds on the webcam features which have been available in Yahoo Messenger for several years now. However, it involves a lot of work both in the client itself but also in the back-end to make sure Yahoo’s infrastructure is up to the task. It only works if both users are on Yahoo Messenger 10, but there shouldn’t be anything holding you back from upgrading, now that the final version has been released.

The second big feature is the Updates tab, which shows up next to the Contacts, allowing you to switch between viewing your friends list or viewing their status updates from a number of services like Twitter, last.fm, Flickr, and a lot more. Details about avast! 5 have been released by ALWIL Software, the upcoming version of its quite popular antivirus. According to the company, the new iteration, planned for release in October, will feature significant improvements in detection and protection capabilities, as well as user experience.

Basically, the product is set to ship in three editions, free, professional and as a complete Internet Security Suite (ISS), something entirely new for ALWIL. Customers who currently own an avast! pro license will be able to upgrade to the new version for free, or acquire a license for the ISS by paying only the price difference between the two editions. According to the company, the heavily optimized antivirus engine will be identical in all editions and will feature a new behavioral-analysis component. Called the Behavior Shield, it monitors the system state via multiple sensors and blocks programs that try to perform malicious actions. A virtualization module will also be available, but for the Pro version only, while a code emulator will be used to inspect malware employing customer packers.

In addition to the new antivirus engine, as well as all the features specific to the Professional edition, the Internet Security Suite will include an antispam and a firewall module, configured to achieve the same worry-free user experience. The user interface has been completely redone and will no longer have two, simple and enhanced, versions. The design looks clean, professional and in line with the minimalist trend observed in the latest security offerings from other AV developers, such as Symantec’s Norton AntiVirus 2010 or Panda’s Cloud Antivirus. They also claim that the system-resource consumption has been significantly reduced and that the product’s influence on boot times is almost unnoticeable. Here’s the new update from Apple to its iTunes digital media player, adding improved compatibility with iPhone and iPod touch running iPhone OS 3.0, and addressing an issue with verification of Apple devices. The software is free and requires at least Mac OS X 10.4.10 (Tiger) on the Mac side, and Win XP SP2 or Vista, on the Windows front.

We know for the fact that it is much easier to organize files using a file manager integrated as default into your own operating system, or by installing appropriate software that will help you to perform various actions on your files, such as browsing, editing and more. When dealing with HTML pages or PHP code for example, it is useful to have a file manager integrated into your web browser. Good thing I find this firefly add-on that once installed it will transform your Firefox web browser in a simple file manager. Thus, you will be able to browse, preview, edit, copy or rename files directly from your Firefox browser. This add-on can be used on Windows, Linux or Mac OS operating system.
