Several week after KFA2 announced the introduction of the quad-display capable Nvidia GTX 580 MDT X4, the graphics card has become available for purchase from several retailers in Europe with prices starting at 5,100 SEK including VAT (569 EUR or $743 US). KFA2 was able to overcome Nvidia’s limitation for two monitors per card by using a third-party IDT VMM1400 controller, a chip that is usually found in multi-display hub devices.

Despite this change, KFA2′s latest creation somewhat resembles the company’s previous GeForce GTX 580 Anarchy as it uses a similar tri-fan cooling solution, but which was now painted black together with the PCB for a more aggressive look. However, unlike the other GTX 580 model in KFA2 lineup, the MDT version drops the usual dual-link DVI outputs in favor of three mini-HDMI and a single DisplayPort connector, which can support up to four monitors simultaneously, double than Nvidia’s reference design.

Three of the displays attached to the card can be combined to form a single surface (for multi-monitor gaming or productivity) with a resolution of 5760×1080 pixels @ 50Hz. The monitors attached to the graphics card can be controlled from the KFA2 EZY Display Setting Management software that is bundled together with the GTX 580 MDT X4.

As far as clock speeds are concerned, the GPU comes factory overclocked to work at 840MHz compared to the 772MHz of the reference design, while the memory frequency is set at the standard 1002MHz (4008MHz data rate), according to Nordic Hardware. The GeForce GTX 580 is based on Nvidia’s GF110 GPU and it packs 512 stream processors, 64 texture units, 48 ROP units and a 384-bit wide memory bus that is usually connected to 1.5GB of GDDR5 video buffer.

Steve Jobs, the mastermind behind Apple’s iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac and iTunes, has died, Apple said. Jobs was 56. His “brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve”.

Neither Jobs’ family nor Apple revealed where Jobs died or from what cause, though in recent years he had fought a form of pancreatic cancer and had a liver transplant. “Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being,” the text read. “Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

US President Barack Obama said that with his death, the world had “lost a visionary”. “Steve was among the greatest of American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it,” said Mr Obama.

A statement from Mr Jobs’s family said they were with him when he died peacefully on Wednesday. In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family,” they said, requesting privacy and thanking those who had “shared their wishes and prayers” during his final year.

Apple said the company had “lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being”. Flags are being flown at half-mast outside the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, while fans of company have held vigils and left tributes outside Apple shops around the world. “What he’s done for us as a culture, it resonates uniquely in every person,” said Cory Moll, an employee at an Apple shop in San Francisco.

“Even if they never use an Apple product, the impact they have had is so far-reaching.” At the company’s Shanghai shop, customer Jin Yi said Mr Jobs had created gadgets which had “changed people’s perceptions of machines”

According to internet rumors Intel had decided to give up on the Atom brand, but it looks like said reports were wrong, according to more recent words on the company’s part, albeit indirect ones. The Atom brand is one that Intel utilizes for a fairly broad range of central processing units, especially those for low-end mobile personal computers.

At present, the entry-level units for low-end notebooks are the ones that have, arguably, shown up most often in the news. Still, the collection includes D, N, Z, E and CE, covering a wide range of electronics, some of which actually have been showing healthy demand. CE is for consumer electronics, Z is for battery optimized chips, N and E are the mainstream models (such as they are) and D is the performance range.

This report says that the Atom branding scheme would be dropped starting in 2012, when Cedar Trail is slated for mass availability. A more recent report says that, according to Brian Fravel, Intel’s director of Marketing for Brand Strategy and Management, the rumor is untrue. Fravel reportedly said that Smart TVs, for instance, are an area where the items are doing particularly well.

Cedar Trail is also supposed to further push the Atom in not just the netbook, but the mobile phone space as well. The company also made some Atom demonstrations during IDF (Intel Developer Forum) and is eager to finish and send out the Medfield. All in all, the Atom brand is not going away any time soon, though it still remains to be seen if Intel decides it appropriate to officially step into the limelight and speak on the matter. After all, some reason exists for this rumor that approaches the level of controversy exhibited by HP’s CEO getting replaced and AMD making its own management changes.

Both chips were running the 3.1 version of the Android mobile operating system, also known as Honeycomb, and the ARM powered tablet was based on an Nvidia Tegra 250 SoC, which relies on two 1GHz Cortex A9 cores. From the benchmarks provided by Intel, the Atom processor was faster in almost all the scenarios that were run.

The biggest difference between the two solutions was recorded in the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark (a test designed to find out the JavaScript performance of the system), where the Intel CPU managed to lead the ARM-based chip by 70 to 80 percent. The Intel Atom Z670 processor is part of the Oak Trail platform which was designed especially to be used inside slates and other low-power devices. The chip features a single computing core running at a frequency of 1.5GHz, 512KB of L2 cache memory as well as a GMA 600 integrated graphics unit that supports OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenGL 2.1 and OpenVG 1.1.

This is actually a rebranded PowerVR SGX 535 GPU that is built using the 45nm fabrication process and run at a higher-than-average frequency. Other features include an on-board 32-bit LPDDR1/DDR2 memory controller and video encode/decode logic which adds hardware acceleration for MPEG-2, VC-1 and AVC video streams. The TDP of the Oak Trail chips is rated at a mere 3W.

Progress is usually a great thing, but it might just be that the DRAM industry has been going forward a bit too quickly.

Over the past couple of years, memory chip makers have been pushing the advancement to better manufacturing processes, also so that NAND chips would get better. Unfortunately, this led to a rapid fill-up of inventories and, coupled with a consumer demand that left much to be desired, began to cause problems last year. Ever since then, average selling prices have been on an almost constant decline and the few instances of recovery were hardly enough to stabilize things.

Basically, the average price of memory chips and, in turn, modules has gotten very low, to the point where PC makers now consider 4 GB to be the standard specification. That being said, prices fell not long ago, again, even though it was previously reported that the decision had been taken to not let them slide any lower anymore. Apparently, the intention still exists, even if the means to achieve it is the equivalent of trading one evil for another, so to speak.

DRAM makers, at least those from Taiwan, are thinking of reducing the production capacity, hoping this will finally prompt prices to inflate again. Of course, this might not really help to alleviate all the losses incurred so far, although there are precedents, like in 2009 and even further back, in late 2008, when falling PC demand and ASPs were taking their toll.
This lineup will be comprised out of no less than 11 motherboards, but the Z68MX-UD3H-B3 is one of just four models to feature support for the Sandy Bridge integrated graphics as all the other lack any kind of display outputs.

This bears an eerie resemblance with the Z68-UD3P-B3, but it uses a much lighter VRM setup that consists only of 7 phases in comparison with the 14 phases of the UD3P. Otherwise, both models feature the same expansion slot layout, which includes 2 PCI-Express 2.0 x16 that work in an x8 mode when both are populated, three PCI-E x1 and two legacy PCI slots. The Z68MX-UD3H is also compatible with 2-way SLI and CrosFire setups.

Storage is provided by four SATA 6Gbps ports and three SATA 3Gbps ports, as the fourth such connector was routed to the rear I/O panel as an eSATA port. This is accompanied by four USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports, a PS/2 port, a FireWire connector, a Gigabit Ethernet interface, 7.1-channel audio with optical S/PDIF out, and a full set of video outputs which includes D-Sub, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort.

Advanced Micro Devices even after months of searching for a new chief executive officer, still has not succeeded in finding a suitable replacement for Dirk Meyer. Not having a leader is definitely not a good thing for any organization, and while an Interim can keep things in check for a short while, the mid to long term plans are still up in the air if no actual CEO is chosen.

For those that don’t remember, about two months ago, Dirk Meyer, the Chief Executive officer of Advanced Micro Devices, announced he was resigning. If anything, this was a very sudden move, one that certain officials, like Co-Founder Jerry Sanders, didn’t agree with, according to later reports that said Meyer had been removed because of a presumably unsatisfactory plan for tablet PCs.

Either way, the CEO left and, even though it has now been two months since the deed, the Sunnyvale, California-based company is still leaderless. Granted, CFO Thomas Seifert has been filling the seat of interim in the meantime, but while this is enough to manage the company’s short term plans, the mid to long-term strategies are more or less up in the air at the moment.

Naturally, in such a situation, the board should be looking for new head figures but, oddly enough, the market is quite bereft of any reports regarding such movements, something certain others also remarked on. Oddly enough, however, there has been word of no such overtures, unsuccessful or otherwise, and any further delays may cause investors to wonder what will become of the CPU, GPU and APU maker if it remains adrift in the sea of uncertainty for much longer.

One of the few companies that didn’t suddenly go inert over the past week is Buffalo, and it seems that its collection of products has just increased, this time by welcoming a new addition to the optical disk drive line. They are long been a supplier of storage solutions of various kinds, as was proven quite recently. Not long ago, the company revealed the existence of not just a portable MiniStation hard disk drive with USB 3.0, but also of the HDS-PXVU2.

At this time, the outfit has provided a press release in which it details the DVSM-PC58U2V, an external DVD writer set to soon debut in Japan. It measures 145 x 19 x 153 mm and has a weight of 340 grams, meaning that carrying it around shouldn’t be any sort of hassle. As far as performance goes, the USB connection, obviously, does not allow it to work as fast as an internal PC drive would. Nevertheless, the newcomer still manages a speed of 8x for DVD-R/+R and DVD+RW, 5x for DVD-RAM and 6x for DVD-R/+R DL and DVD-RW.

Moreover, like any self-respecting optical drive, it can scribe CDs as well, the speed being of 24x for CD-R/RW. Buffalo made a point of giving the optical drive two USB ports instead of just one. One is meant for the data transfer itself, while the other provides the power. Of course, if one is so inclined, providing energy via an AC adapter is also possible. Either way, two special cut-outs can store the USB cables when transporting the ODD. To enhance the appeal of the product, Buffalo included the CyberLink Power2Go 7 and InstantBurn 5 software in the product bundle.

Powered by a Core i7-720QM quad-core processor this thing comes with 6GB of DDR3 memory, a 500GB 7200RPM hard drive as well as 17.3″ 1080p 3D UltraBrightView Infinity LED LCD, quite a departure from the usual Envy 17 that features “only” a Core i5 processor and a HD+ resolution display in its standard configuration.

The necessary graphics power is delivered by an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 GPU with a rather impressive 1GB of video memory, such a powerful video card being required in order to maintain an adequate frame rate for 3D gaming. Apart from these changes, the remaining hardware configuration remained unchanged from the standard Envy 17, HP’s offering featuring an Blu-ray optical drive, TruVision HD Webcam, a backlit keyboard as well as 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth connectivity.

Other features include a 5-in-1 integrated card reader, 3 USB 2.0 ports (one of them being shared with an eSATA connector), HDMI and mini-DisplayPort video outputs as well as a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port for attaching your last gen USB external storage solutions. Hardware wise, HP allows users to spice things up even more, the Envy 17 3D being also available with faster quad-core processors (up to Core i7-840QM) as well as 8GB of RAM and 2TB of storage space, HP allowing you to configure this with regular HDD or SSD drives or any combination of the two since it supports dual 2.5 internal storage devices.

The new line of memory products that Patriot created is the Viper Xtreme Series Extreme Performance DDR3. There are, for now, two memory kits available, one composed of a pair of 2GB modules, thus with a total capacity of 4GB, and one with two 4GB modules, for a total of 8GB. Both of them have latencies of 9-10-9-27 and, more importantly, a frequency of 2,000 MHz, making them quite suited for overclocking.

The newcomers operate on a current of 1.65V and utilize specially-designed heatshields that are constructed out of both aluminum and copper. These are “built with an extruded aircraft-grade aluminum heat spreader and an inner copper strip” and should be capable of improving heat dissipation by 5% compared to heatspreaders made solely of aluminum.

“Patriot has been offering some of the fastest performance memory solutions in the world, and our Viper Xtreme series delivers a high-end solution with a custom heatshield built around a copper core to offer better cooling. Our in-house engineering expertise and knowledge of the enthusiast market has helped us push the boundaries and set the standard for DDR3 memory solutions. With Viper Xtreme series modules showcase our expertise in developing and delivering performance solutions for the enthusiast market”, says Les Henry, Patriot’s VP of Engineering.
