One of the oldest batteries used in laptops is the NiCad, nothing but the Nickel Cadmium, which is very rarely used today. These Nickel Cadmium or the NiCad batteries is very heavier when compared to laptop batteries which are used to day. These NiCad batteries are prone to memory effect and they aren’t environment friendly as it contains heavy metals. Now battery manufactures have stopped manufacturing batteries of this type. The Nickel Metal Hydride or NiMH batteries are less likely to be prone to memory effects, but produces better power when compared to NiCad batteries. However most companies have stopped manufacturing NiMH batteries also.

The Lithium Ion or Li-Ion batteries is the most commonly used batteries used today in Laptops and also in other digital gadgets as Lithium Ion or Li-Ion batteries are compatible, provides excellent power and lesser in weight. Li-Ion batteries are very much useful in smaller and lighter devices such as digital cameras, mobile phones and of course in laptops. Another biggest advantage of Lithium Ion batteries is that they do not suffer memory effect at all! However these batteries tend to lose its charge quickly towards the end of their life span. If this happens, then this is an indication, that the battery needs to be replaced.

Here is useful information on laptop batteries; Laptop batteries are rated by “V” which means voltage and “mAh” which stands for Milliamp-hours. Voltage is the rate of energy or power drawn from the battery into the laptop. The Milliamp-hours shows the run time of the battery. Therefore if the battery has higher mAh / Milliamp-hours, then it means the battery will run for a longer time. Batteries having different mAh / Milliamp-hours can be used for laptops but you need to make sure that the voltage rating is the same. You need to cross check with your laptop manual or you older laptop battery to make sure that voltage rating is the same. In case if you’re using batteries of different voltage, then it can cause very serious damage to your laptop.

Here are some useful tips to ensure optimal battery life: Use the AC adapter whenever possible, try lowering the brightness settings on the screen backlight. Set the Windows Power Management settings to maximum savings. Try turning off AutoSaved features and disable auto Insert Notification on the CD-ROM. Also disconnect any unused devices such as modems when not in use. Put your laptop to Hibernate or Suspend feature when you are taking a break.

Laptops are small mobile computers that are light and portable enough to fit on your lap. They weigh usually in the range of 4 to10 pounds depending on the materials, size and other factors. When compared to the PC Desktop, the portable laptops are different on the basis of peripherals and weight. A typical portable laptop computer has a weight of four to five pounds. Some bulkier laptops range in their weights from six to seven pounds as they may have a CDROM/DVDROM or a floppy drive.

Laptops operate typically on a single battery and function similar to their desktop counterparts as the basic components of laptops and desktop computers are same. Laptops have liquid crystal (LCD) displays and uses different RAM modules. A portable notebook or laptop is provided with a pointing stick or touch pad and built-in keyboard as an input device. You can also plug in an external mouse. The power consumption and noise are less compared to a desktop. Unlike desktops, laptops can be run on batteries also.

Osborne 1 was the first available portable computer in 1981 for commercial use. This portable computer weighed about 24 pounds and was available at a price of about 1800 dollars. Later IBM launched ‘Kaypro’ in 2000, which had a LCD display of 25 lines and 80 characters, a removable keyboard and a floppy drive of 3.5 inches.

The following are the different types of laptops. Ultra-Mobile PCs are small in size and portable. Ultra portables have LCD screen of about 12 inches or less, weighing about 3 to 5 pounds. Thin-and-light Laptops typically weigh about 4 to 6 pounds and have a screen size of 12 to 14 inches. Mainstream Laptops have a screen size of about 14.1 inches to 15.4 inches and weigh about 5 to 7 pounds.

Laptops have proven to be useful in many ways. While on the move, from students to business executives, software professionals and housewives have found laptops to be beneficial. Laptops are available across a wide range of brands, models, sizes, styles and prices. As the innovative laptops have increased in demand, leading notebook manufacturers such as IBM, HP-Compaq, Dell, Acer, Sony and Toshiba are offering sophisticated laptops with innovative features and designs. As the demand for laptops has increased, you should be careful when choosing a laptop. You can look for reviews on laptops from online sources and the manufacturers also provide the information on the various models available with details of prices, specifications and ratings on their websites.

Laptops have to be chosen based on the features such as Portability, Price, Screen size, speed, memory, upgradeability, hard drives, batteries and hardware. You can go for a laptop with a better screen resolution of 1024 x 768 XGA or 1280 x 1024 SXGA. For getting best performance in terms of speed, laptops can be chosen having memory capacities of 128MB, 256MB, 512MB or 1GB of RAM, depending on your use of application. For occasional typing and web surfing, a laptop with a memory of 256 MB RAM is sufficient. You need to also check for lithium batteries as they offer longer life. Other peripherals such as standard floppy or DVD drives are required. Though laptops are expensive than desktop computers for similar configurations, the price tag is not big when compared to the functions they offer.

As the web has evolved, so have the methods of collecting personal information. A large number of websites require visitors to register to gain access or participate. While the need for registration is understandable, tracking user names and passwords can be burdensome. Consider using software to store your passwords, in a safe accessible manner.

Most websites have privacy policies, but the value of privacy statements is only as honorable as the people behind the websites. Here are suggestions for keeping passwords and your information secure:

change your password frequently

never share your password with anyone

try to choose a password so it doesn’t need to be written down, but not so obvious others would easily guess the password

be sure your password is at least 6 characters

don’t use a password containing all the same characters

don’t send your password via email or provide it over the phone

don’t use pet, family or friend names

don’t use your telephone number, zip code or address

use a different password for each account

don’t use user name

deactivate accounts for terminated employees

don’t allow shared accounts

password contains upper, lowercase letters, non-letter characters and numbers

Passwords are not foolproof. Do not rely on a password alone to protect sensitive information. Monitor accounts closely to ensure that security is not breached.

You have probably heard the expression: “You can’t be too rich or too thin.” Well, now you can also add: “You can’t have too much memory.” Actually, that last phrase is little misleading because when buying RAM (Random Access Memory) for your computer you can have too much if your computer doesn’t have the hardware to handle or utilize your entire RAM. But for the most part, as any computer user will quickly realize, when it comes to computers you can’t have too much memory.

Therefore, when buying a laptop or computer, memory should be one of your main considerations. Go for the highest amount you can afford simply because the more RAM you have, the faster your computer will run. Besides, many of today’s software applications place ever increasing demands on your system’s memory. You have peripherals such as webcams, digital cameras, DVD players, USB hard drives… throw in extremely complicated webpages and PC based video games… all needing more and more RAM. Who knows what the immediate future will bring and what extra demands will be made upon your system’s memory.

The Tricky Issue of Shared Memory

Keep in mind, that unless you have a high end graphics video card with its own memory, your system’s memory will more than likely be shared between your Processor (CPU) and your graphics chip (video memory). Which means when your computer uses its own memory for your operating system, software applications, peripherals, your memory is quickly used up if this memory is also shared to run your video/graphics – and your system will report significantly less memory than what you originally thought you had.

That’s why many computer gamers will buy expensive Graphics Cards with lots of dedicated video RAM or built-in video memory. This way you can turn off the shared memory and free up your system’s memory for maximum power. While you can change or configure your shared memory thru your computer’s BIOS settings, many experts suggest you leave this setting alone since it is already optimized for best video/display performance. In other words, you could screw up your display resolutions unless you know exactly what you’re doing.

So buying extra RAM or high-end Graphics Cards will always be a safer option; if not the cheapest route to take. Often these gamers will even connect two or more GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) together in a SLI configuration so they will have enough memory and graphics processing power for all their highly demanding video graphics and games. SLI (Scalable Link Interface), PCI Express (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express), FSB (Front Side Bus) are all ways of handling/transferring RAM and your data quickly to the components that need it within your computer. That’s why RAM speed is also important for smoother running applications and games.

How Much Memory Should You Get?

When buying any system there is usually a limit to how much memory your device can hold or take. These days the amount of RAM is increasing, many systems can now take from 1 to 8 Gigs of RAM. You should ask or check the specs for the computer or laptop you’re buying and it will display the installed memory for you, plus it will also tell you the maximum memory that can be installed.

Today’s laptops and computers require a large amount of RAM, Windows Vista alone is recommended at 1 Gig of RAM, but many computer users have found using 2 or 3 Gigs of RAM will help to make Vista run more smoothly, if that’s possible. Although you can run Windows XP on 128MB of RAM, you should use 256 MB or more for best results. For the Mac OS X system you will need a minimum of 128 MB but for optimal performance try 512 MB. Linux will work nicely on a system with only 4 MB of RAM.

Of course, the devil is in the details, if you only want to use your computer for simple computing, browsing the web, reading and sending emails… then your memory requirements will be minimum, why waste your money on RAM that you will not be using. So if your memory requirements are very low, you can save yourself some money by going with the minimum amount of RAM, just make sure it is enough to run your computer (OS, CPU and Videos) smoothly. Always keep in mind, in most cases you can simply install extra memory in the future if you should need it.

The video display consists of a Graphics Card, Monitor, and the Bus. If you’re wondering what the heck a Bus is in any video display, it’s the data path along which data moves into, out of, and inside the computer.

This data is sent from the motherboard and central processing unit, to the graphics card, travels along the data path or Bus, to the Monitor where our eyes can see it. The data Bus is partly responsible for our clear and fast the graphics of our favorite games are displayed.

It does not matter how fast the CPU chip or graphics card can send data if the Bus becomes too small and prevents the data from traveling fast. This causes a bottleneck of data when the graphics card sends data faster than the Bus can allow it to travel.

The first Bus was introduced by IBM or International Business Machines and was called the ISA. The Industry Standard Architecture Bus was slow and weak since it sent data at just 4MHz.

But it was matched with the CPU chip of that day. The average cpu speed during this time was around 4.77MHz. This bus came in 1981 and IBM created a faster bus soon after with a 16 bit bus with a cpu speed of 8 to 10 MHz three years later.

By this time many other computer makers were building Computers using the IBM design and IBM quickly responded to the competition by making a proprietary bus called the MCA or Micro Channel Architecture.

When IBM built proprietary Buses they mean they built hardware or software, in this case Buses, owned and controlled by a single individual or organization.

The Bus technology came about in the following order.

1983 IBM introduced the ISA Bus and in 1984 the faster 16 bit ISA Bus arrived. Then in 1987 the 32 bit MCA Bus showed up. And in 1988 Compaq and other PC makers released the 32 bit EISA or Extended Industry Standard Architecture bus

1993 brought us the Video Electronics Standards Association or the VESA Bus. This year also allowed the release of the PCI or Personal Computer Interconnect Bus.

And in 1996 came the AGP or the Advanced Graphics Port while 1998 brought us the AGP 2.0 and in 2002 came the, you got it, the AGP 3.0 data bus.

Finally in 2005 Intel and AMD introduced computers running at speeds of 4Gigabytes or more. At these speeds the AGP port presented at slowdown for the data.

So the folks at Intel put their heads together and came up with the PCIe. The Personal Computer Interconnect Express. The bus is like the PCI but uses a serial port whereas the PCI use parallel ports.

Parallel ports send data in chumps and Serial ports send data one at a time. With the PCI bus, each slot share a maximum of 132MB a second and the PCIe allows each slot to have 250 Megabytes a second to send data.

PCIe is intended to be used as a local interconnect only, as it is based on the existing PCI system, cards, and systems can be adapted to PCI Express without any change in software. The higher speeds on PCIe allow it to replace almost all existing buses. Nearly all high end graphics cards today in 2006 from AIT and NVIDIA use PCI Express, and Nvidia use the faster data transfer of PCIe for their SLI or Scalable Link Interface technology. This technology allows two graphics cards of the same chipset and model number to be ran at the same time. This greatly boost performance like you never thought possible. Not to be out done, ATI came on the scene with their dual GPU system or Graphics Processing Unit called the Crossfire.

As you can see, the PCI Express bus is faster and if possible, when purchasing your next computer, be certain it comes with PCI Express slots. The AGP data bus was fast compared to the PCI but they are both fading away. So it is very beneficial to you if you get to know and understand the PCIe in every detail.

For several years, people have been storing their computer data locally in order to make sure that it is safe. The Internet, however, is changing a lot of different things. One change that seems to be happening is that many individuals are switching over to a remote data storage backup. There are many different reasons why they may do this but ultimately, it comes down to just a few, convenience, price and options. Let’s take a look at each of these three and see why backing your data on the Internet really does beat backing it up locally.

Convenience - Many people would argue that backing up your data locally is very convenient. When you really think about it, however, how convenient is it? If you’re going to back your data properly, you need to make sure that you run the backup every night. This typically means that you must be there while the backup is running. While the data is being accessed, your computer typically slows down as a result of the additional activity. It almost becomes drudgery, backing up your data in order to make sure that it is safe. After that, you need to take the data to a secure location that is away from the computer should a tragedy strike. By backing your data on a remote server, over the Internet, you can schedule it to happen after you have already left for the night. The data is safely Off-site and all of your days’ work as well as the rest of your data is secure at another location.

Price – Depending on your backup needs, you might spend hundreds of dollars on a backup system, multiple tapes or backup media and a technician to make sure that it is all installed properly. If something should go wrong with the system, you can plan on spending it all again, not to mention upgrades that need to take place periodically. On a remote backup system, the only thing that you have is a small monthly fee which is flexible, depending on the amount of server space that you actually need. Any upgrades that need to take place will not affect your price at all.

Options - You do have several different options when it comes to a backup drive. These options, however, typically come in the form of the type of media that you plan on using. A local backup drive cannot really stack up to the options that are offered via remote backup service. Things such as automatic backups, redundant storage sites and multiple servers are just some of the features which you might find beneficial.

The Internet certainly is changing things. Fortunately, it is also changing the way that we store our backup files for the better. Take advantage of the new technology and keep your data safe in a remote location. Not only is it convenient, it is the better choice.

What is Windex? It’s water, ammonia and some blue food coloring for the most part. The magic is in the ammonia. Ammonia is pretty nasty stuff. It can almost bring you back from a coma just by smelling it and it’s the main ingredient in smelling salts. Not oddly enough ammonia is used as a reactive agent in many invisible ink formulas. As a side note, never mix ammonia with bleach. It will produce chlorine gas, a very dangerous substance used in World War I as a chemical weapon. Ever heard of mustard gas?

Okay, enough with the chemistry lesson. What I’m saying is even though ammonia is great for dissolving ink please be careful when using it. Most of the toughest clogs can be fixed by soaking the print head in a bowl of a 50/50% solution of ammonia and water overnight. If that doesn’t work you can soak it in pure ammonia for up to 1 hour then a 100% water rinse.

If your print head is not removable you can inject a diluted ammonia mix (10% ammonia and 90% de-ionized water, or just use Windex) into an empty cartridge and run print head cleanings to get the solution into the print head. If the clog does not open leave the printer sit overnight and try it again the next day. Many times the clog will release overnight as the ammonia solution goes to work.

Some people will tell you to use alcohol to unclog cartridges and print heads. While it may work for a short while the alcohol will actually increase the chances of another clog. This is because the alcohol will tend to dry out the plastics and metals in the head. Alcohol will only fix very mild clogs that could probably be fixed with an aggressive print head cleaning. If you want to do the job right use the ammonia solutions as I discussed above.

Most of us don’t make a real difference between worm, virus and Trojan Horse or refer to a worm or Trojan Horse as a virus. All of us know all are malicious programs that can cause very serious damage to PC. Exist differences among the three, and knowing those differences can help you better protect your computer from their often damaging effects.

A computer virus is a program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes. Some viruses cause only mildly annoying effects while others can damage your hardware, software or files. Almost all viruses are attached to an executable file, which means the virus may exist on your computer but it cannot infect your computer unless you run or open the malicious program. A virus cannot be spread without a human action, (such as running an infected program) to keep it going. People continue the spread of a computer virus, mostly unknowingly, by sharing infecting files or sending e-mails with viruses as attachments in the e-mail.

A worm is a program or algorithm that replicates itself. A worm has the capability to travel without any help from a person from PC to PC and have ability to replicate itself on your system, so rather than your computer sending out a single worm, it could send out hundreds or thousands of copies of itself, creating a huge devastating effect.

A Trojan Horse is a destructive program that “working” as a benign application (like changing your desktop, adding silly active desktop icons) or can cause serious damage by deleting files and destroying information on your system. Trojans are also known to create a back door on your computer that gives malicious users access to your system, possibly allowing confidential or personal information to be compromised. Trojans do not reproduce by infecting other files nor do they self-replicate.

Added into the mix, we also have what is called a blended threat. Blended threats combine the characteristics of viruses, worms, Trojan Horses, and malicious code with server and Internet vulnerabilities. By using multiple methods and techniques, blended threats can rapidly spread and cause widespread damage. Characteristics of blended threats include: causes harm, propagates by multiple methods, attacks from multiple points, and exploits vulnerabilities. This combination of method and techniques means blended threats can spread quickly and cause widespread damage. Characteristics of blended threats include: causes harm, propagates by multiple methods, attacks from multiple points and exploits vulnerabilities. They are considered to be the worst risk to security since the inception of viruses, as most blended threats require no human intervention to propagate.

Therefore is very important to protect your PC with good anti-virus software installed on your system with the latest fixes for new viruses, worms, and Trojan horses.

In addition, you want to make sure your anti-virus program has the ability to scan e-mail and files as they are downloaded from the Internet. This will help prevent malicious programs from even reaching your computer. You should also install a system that prevents unauthorized use and access to your computer (firewall as well). A good software firewall will protect your computer from outside attempts to control or gain access your computer, and usually provides additional protection against the most common Trojan programs or e-mail worms.

When you buy a headset, you should see some features which are necessary to make it suitable for you. Whether it is a Bluetooth enabled one or the traditional stuff, you should ascertain that the headset meets your requirements. In this regard, the following few points will be of paramount help. You will get to know which type of headset will be suitable for the kind of purpose you have.

Low cost, lightweight, reliability, comfort and power are some of the most important features you should look for in a headset. Among the other matters which is very important and need to be taken into account when ordering headsets is the issue of connectivity. There are more than one ways in which a headset can be attached to telephone, terminal, PC etc. It depends upon what it is connected to and what type of line it is working on.

In the world of headsets, Bluetooth is the household name now, getting rid of disturbing wires hanging from the shoulder while enjoying the same voice clarity is a welcome relief. And this is possible when you use a Bluetooth headset. So far the trend is to use such type of headsets only with mobile phones. But there is no reason for the PC community to not make use of it.

It is true that the need of a Bluetooth headset is not as strong for a PC as it is with a mobile phone. You use this device with your mobile phone when you are on the move. On the other hand, when you are using the PC, you are stable in a position. So, the need of Bluetooth computer headset may not be as important. Probably, because of this, there is no PC hardware manufacturer who has designed a Bluetooth headset primarily for a PC.

MP3 Tag Tools is freeware and there are many other programs that have similar functions. Tags will be generated from the file name or the folder name. You can process all your MP3 files at the same time, and even re-name files according to their tags.

Now that you have all your MP3s tagged, you need to have a database to make it easy to find any song in your collection. Once again, there are hundreds of programs specifically designed to catalog your music collection. You can find both freeware and commercial products. You don’t have to use a program specifically for MP3s – any search program can find files for you – but MP3 cataloguers have special functions for organizing your music collection and creating playlists.

MediaMonkey is a popular software title which manages your entire music collection including MP3s, CDs, and other popular formats like OGG, WMA and FLAC. It has a built-in player and has functions for building playlists, ripping CDs, finding CD information from the internet, and automatic volume adjustment. You can use MediaMonkey or other similar programs to search for a song by title, artist, year, album or almost any other criteria including bitrate, length, or file format.
