As the rise in popularity and use of the internet increases, the more sophisticated the attacks on the users by those stealing identities, spreading viruses, or simply monitoring the user for monetary gain. It is easy to get a virus and it is easy to have your credit card number stolen, but you can take steps to prevent these things from happening to you. The following is a simple guide that anyone can follow to increase protection from these threats.

Keep the operating system updated. Make sure your system is set to update automatically, so that critical services are patched when security flaws are found. Hackers and malware in general take advantage of flaws in system software to infiltrate and install onto the system. Keeping the system up to date is the first step in computer security.

Keep all security software updated. Make sure your anti-virus and antispyware solutions are the latest versions and that they are set to download signatures on a regular basis. Malware authors constantly change tactics and use different techniques to avoid being detected. As malware change the solutions also have to change in order to detect them. Keeping your security software updated can increase your chance of detecting a vulnerability.

Use a safe web browser and keep it updated. Because of its popularity, Internet Explorer is the most targeted browser for malware authors. The flaws in the browser that allow access to the computer are well known and traded amongst hackers world wide. Switching to another web browser will greatly reduce your chance of getting infected with spyware or a virus.

Use caution visiting unpopular sites. Not so well known sites are sometimes embedded with malware designed to infiltrate your system. Don’t click on everything at a site that is new to you. Read everything carefully and if anything looks suspicious then leave. The internet is large and there are plenty of places to get the information you seek. It is always a good idea to stick with sites you are familiar with.

Use caution clicking on links sent to you. Just because someone emailed you a link doesn’t mean you have to click on it. Make sure you know the person who sent the link and that there is a description of the link in the email. Email is one of the most common forms of spreading a virus.

Use caution clicking on links in discussion forums. Forums and chat rooms are a wonderful place to make new friends, but these social outlets are magnets for people wanting to do harm. Forums can attract thousands of people a day and hundreds of people can be attacked all at once by just one simple malicious post. Make sure you are familiar with the handle of the person posting a link.

Download software from the original vendor. It is quite common for malware authors to bundle their wares with legitimate software and offer it for download on their site. To be safe you can do a search for the company that made the software and download it from that site. It is not only safer but a lot of times you get the latest version of the software.

Check links before logging on to do banking related activities. A common technique thieves use to get your credentials is to claim your password needs changed at an online banking service. Look carefully at the link and you will see that it is not the same as the link you usually use to login. These links sometimes start with numbers, or maybe they will just change one letter thinking you will not notice. To be safe, only use the link that your banking service gave you to do any banking or changing of passwords.

Nowadays we see a lot of individuals lugging their laptops around, may it be for business or for personal use. And although laptops seem common these days, it does not mean that they come cheap. Purchasing a laptop is still considered to be a big investment and is not something that should be rushed into. You simply cannot just go to the computer shop, choose one that has a color that fits to your liking and say “charge.” There are a number of factors that you have to consider so that you can be sure that your purchased laptop gives you your money’s worth. Clever minds or even common sense would tell you that before you splurge that cash, take into account what you are buying. If your excuse is that you do not have enough knowledge about laptops then fret no further. Here are a few helpful tips that should guide you in your electronic notebook shopping spree!

First is to figure out the purpose for which you will be using the laptop and the frequency of use. When you are going to be using your laptop on a regular basis, then it is important that you should buy one that provides you with the utmost ease and comfort in usage. Basic ergonomics would tell you that the laptop violates the rule which states that the keyboard and the screen should be separated to prevent trouble and pain in the wrist and the neck area. However, there are laptops which offer an interface which lessen the risks of carpal tunnel syndrome and neck pains. Go for comfort other than the color and the design when choosing. Thus, it is better to use a separate mouse than to depend on the tracking knob or pointer that is provided for in most laptops as a substitute for a mouse. This way you have more room and space to move your hands when typing or clicking on objects on the screen.

The ability to connect with other devices through your laptop is another thing to look into when buying a new laptop. Connectivity is an issue because connection upgrades for a laptop is not an easy feat because laptops are made with a basic design as compared with desktops. The thing to check for is the availability of wireless networking capabilities. A USB port is an important feature. Find a laptop that has more than one port so that you would not have to struggle and switch from your digital camera to your mp3 player to your external hard drive with just one.

Another thing that is not easily upgradeable is the processor. You do not want to have bought a new laptop and learn a couple of weeks or months after that your unit is already obsolete. Look for high performance graphic solutions processors that work just as well as their desktop counterparts.

Even Julius Caesar used it when he was sending messages because he didn’t trust to his messengers. You see encryption is everywhere, when you watch some spy film you see there’s always a computer with encrypted files or some film about hackers when the feds busted the hacker and they see all of the hacker’s files are encrypted.

When you have simple .txt file that you can read this is called “plain text”. But when you use encryption and encrypt the file it will become unreadable by the time you don’t enter the password. This text is called cipher text. The process of converting a cipher text into plain text is called decryption.

Here’s a little example:

Plain text ==>Encryption==>Ciphertext==>Descryption==>Plaintext

This example shows you the way when you encrypt and decrypt a file.

We understand that those computers that we are using have a hard drive in it, which stores everything that we put on it, plus all the settings that we prefer. Imagine how difficult it would be if you were to lose all of your data and have to set everything back up again. That is why a full hard drive backup is the preferred method of data backup because every last bit of data is stored and not even your daylight savings time preference will be forgotten. There are many ways to make a perfect mirror image of your hard drive, and some are better than others. Let’s talk about the various strategies and find out what will best suit you.

Using good hard drive image software – first way to make a perfect copy of your hard drive quickly and seamlessly. A great example of this type of software is True Image from Acronis, which is complete imaging software that helps anyone make a perfect image of their hard drive and save it anywhere, even the hard drive if they want to. Of course there are also many other types of software on the market, and all are just as unique too. Just be sure to choose a good one, because if you don’t, it could end up being the biggest mistake you ever made on your computer.

RAID method – if you are a little more technically inclined and have some knowledge of installing computer parts, then you could always use this method. Basically, RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) requires you to install another new hard drive and can be used to make a perfect mirror image of your current hard drive, which will always be up to date by the second. There are many different levels to RAID, but if you were using it for hard drive backup purposes, you would use level 1. Level one is called disk mirroring or duplicating and this level will write data to both hard drives simultaneously, so when something happens to one there will always be the other one to fall back on.

Backup everything individually yourself – final way to make a copy of your hard drive, this is of course the hardest and most time consuming strategy, but is preferred by some experts because you can choose what to save. If you do use this method, you need to make sure you back up your registry files, system files and other important files and folders that you have. You might also want to save your entire software program folders, as they might contain important data related to the program that you want to definitely save.

If you are using Windows XP, there is a backup utility that you can use for free, located in your “System tools” folder. Go there by clicking “Start” on your bottom toolbar, then go to “All Programs”, and then “Accessories”. You should now see a folder labeled “System tools” and once that is open, click on the “Backup” program.

Then it is the right time to have your laptop upgraded! But before you proceed with upgrading, you should search for all the criteria that needs to be upgraded to give a new look plus more capacity to your laptop. Several things can be upgraded in laptops such as, memory, the video card, the processor, the hard disk etc. Therefore it is essential for you to be sure of your motive for upgrading your laptop.

Starting from the memory or the RAM (random access memory), you can upgrade this very easily by opening a partition in the laptops bottom. Here you can add to or remove the memory. The RAM can be decided by you at the time of the purchase of the laptop. However, there is a similar RAM contained in the laptop so that you can utilize it when you feel you need to upgrade your laptop memory. You may be able to install it yourself, but if you are not sure of how to do it seek the help of a skilled technician.

Together with the memory you can upgrade the video card of your laptop too. The newly manufactured and hi tech laptops offer these options to the user. However, this was not so easy or not available in the earlier designs of laptops. For upgrading laptops with their video cards you will have to buy a new and better chip to replace the old one as it was said before, not all types of laptops have such facilities for replacement. If you are not sure about yours, you should consult your manufacturer about this issue.

Like the memory and the video card you can enhance the hard disk drive too. Based on the manufacturer, you have the opportunity of upgrading the hard disk size. You can choose to change the hard disk by going for the larger sizes and in that respect the best thing will be to consider the external drives first. The external drives are the USB drives and though this may hamper the portability of the laptop, it is still considered to be good.

Considering the given information, it is clear that upgrading laptops is not a very difficult task. However it is true that in certain instances the help or the suggestion of the manufacturer or skilled technician is a must. Otherwise if you are familiar with the type of laptop you own, then nothing should prevent you from upgrading it by yourself.
