According to the latest news Apple Company confirmed that a free software update would be rolled out for all iPhone users. In respond to criticism over the iPhone 4’s reception issues, which Apple continues to label as inexistent. Scheduled to arrive in “a few weeks”, the update will be made available not only for iPhone 4 users, but also for owners of an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS.

“Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength,” the company said. “For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars,” Apple explained. “Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place,” Apple’s theory goes. Some, however, are not convinced the iPhone maker is telling the truth.

“We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula,” Apple finally discloses (emphasis ours). “Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G,” the letter reveals, adding that “this software update will only make your bars more accurate.”

Apple has unveiled a redesign of its popular iPhone handset. The revamped gadget has a stainless steel case, two cameras, and improved display and is 24% thinner than the most recent version. They also highlighted key new additions such as FaceTime video calling, the all-new Retina Display with a remarkable 960-by-640 resolution in a 3.5-inch screen, HD video recording, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, iBooks, iMovie applications and more.

“iPhone 4 is the biggest leap since the original iPhone,” Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, said. “FaceTime video calling sets a new standard for mobile communication, and our new Retina display is the highest resolution display ever in a phone, with text looking like it does on a fine printed page. We have been dreaming about both of these breakthroughs for decades.”

Weighing in on the 3.5-inch Retina display, Apple claims it has 960 x 640 pixels – four times as many pixels as the iPhone 3GS, and 78 percent of the pixels on an iPad, for comparison. Going great with the improved screen is the improved camera with 5-megapixel autofocus, 5x digital zoom, a backside illuminated sensor, and built-in LED flash for shooting in dark environments. The built-in Photos app has also been enhanced, while users will be able to enhance and edit the videos taken with iPhone 4 thanks to the new iMovie app.

For those who like to play a lot of games on their iPhone, Cupertino has confirmed the addition of a 3-axis gyro. This combines with the accelerometer, providing 6-axis motion sensing – up and down, side to side, forward and backward and pitch and roll –, making it perfect for gaming, Apple says.

Also among yesterday’s announcements, Apple revealed it had decided to change the iPhone OS dubbing to iOS. iOS 4 is touted by Apple as “the newest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system.” The new software is set to deliver over 100 new features, including Multitasking, Folders, enhanced Mail, deeper Enterprise support, Game Center and Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform when it arrives later this month. iOS 4 is fully supported on iPhone 3GS, iPod touch third generation and iPad, and partially supported on older hardware such as the iPhone 3G.

Running under the BlackBerry 6 OS, the new device is reportedly headed to the market with a sliding QWERTY keyboard, which is complemented by a virtual QWERTY keypad, as some of the images below show.

The yet unannounced handset marks a shift from the popular candybar QWERTY devices included in the company’s Bold series, given the sliding design, while also bringing into the mix some features from the Storm smartphones, with that touchscreen display it should sport. The screen boasts a 360 x 480 pixel resolution, and it seems that the SurePress technology won’t be present into the mix, yet specific details on what it should include are still missing.

Among the specifications that the BlackBerry Bold 9800 Slider might come to the market with, we can count 512 MB of RAM, coupled with 4 GB of on-board memory and a microSD memory card slot for additional storage space. Wi-Fi connectivity should be present on the device too, as well as a 5-megapixel photo snapper and a trackpad.
