The upcoming documentary about the Pirate Bay managed to get the funding it needed for a professional editing studio in just three days, with the help of the Pirate Bay and its users. The Pirate Bay – Away from Keyboard is a documentary which aims to depict the story of the people behind the site, its three founders. Filmmaker Simon Klose has been working on this project for the past two years and has traveled around the world to cover the story.

So far, he has amassed over 200 hours of footage which must now be shrunk to at least 100 times less. Being that this is such a complicated story, the task of editing the footage is not trivial, which is why the filmmaker wanted to hire a professional editor. Of course, professional help is costly, so Klose chose Kickstarter as a funding platform. Kickstarter enables fans, users and everyone else to contribute to the funding of an album, a movie or even a startup.

But Klose also got some help from the Pirate Bay itself, which promoted the project on the homepage and asked ‘pirates’ to contribute. Klose estimated he would need at least $25,000 and gave it a month for the sum to be raised. In just three days though, Pirate Bay fans had already donated enough. And the money kept on coming, now, with 25 days to go from the initial period, the film has raised over $35,000.

The movie is still some time from completion, especially since the fate of the Pirate Bay or its founders is still uncertain. The appeal in the Pirate Bay case will start in about a month’s time. Depending on how it all plays out, The Pirate Bay – Away from Keyboard is at least a year away from premiering.

Facebook Hit with New Scams

Two new scams that prey on people’s curiosity are quickly making their way through Facebook. One claims a mother went to jail because she took a picture of her son, while the other promises to reveal the reason that might lead to the shutdown of McDonald’s.

“OMG!! Guys, you have to see this: This mother went to jail for taking this pic of her son! —> [URL]” one of the spam messages reads. Clicking on the link takes users to a rogue Facebook profile with a name similar to the message.

This profile has a page called ‘SEE HERE!’ which instructs users to “Like” it in order to see the intriguing picture. Furthermore, to entice people even more it promises that “Your jaw will drop to the floor!”

Liking the page will get users no closer to seeing a image and will instead ask them to spread more spam, this time by posting the original message on their wall for all their family and friends to see. Users who are gullible enough to accept this, will finally get a link to allegedly see the elusive picture.

Unfortunately, following it doesn’t have the expected result and prompts users to take one of four surveys as a “security check.” Taking a survey is definitely not a good idea as there are high chances of ending up being billed for some sort of premium service and compromised personal information.

The second scam is almost identical in concept as the first, but uses a different lure. In this case the spam message reads “OMG!! McDonalds might soon shut down because of this, you have to see this! –> [URL]” and no, it’s no better than the first. If you are a victim of any of them make sure to delete the rogue messages from your profile and remove the fake pages from your Like list.

“I really feel like despairing that the general public will ever learn to avoid dodgy links like this. Far too many people are prepared to endorse and share links on Facebook without properly thinking about what they are doing. In this case they’re doing it before they have any clue about what lies behind the page,” Graham Cluley, senior security at antivirus vendor Sophos, commented.

Firefox 4.0 Alpha 1 ‘Download Now’

Hottest development milestone of the next generation of Mozilla’s open source browser made available for download and also the first fully fledged taste of Firefox 3.6’s successor. The Mozilla Developer Preview 1.9.3 Alpha, also labelled Firefox 3.7 Alpha 5, is in fact the first Alpha release of Firefox 4.0.

First thing that customers will notice is the overhauled graphical user interface sported by Firefox 4.0 Alpha. The revamped UI is tailored to Windows 7’s Aero GUI, with a full transparency effect, similar to that of Internet Explorer 8 running on top of the latest version of the Windows client. At the same time, the redesign now allows users to place the Tabs on top of the Address Bar, and switch off the Menu, to achieve a Ribbon/Fluent-like look and feel. The evolution of Firefox 4.0’s UI is not yet done, but, when it will be completed, the browser will share style elements with Office 2010 and Office 2007.

Another notable feature, but this time around for developers, is support for WebM. Mozilla revealed since day 1 of the WebM project that it was backing the initiative, and, by the looks of it, the company is going to provide native support for WebM, with the focus on VP8. In this regard, VP8 will be the second HTML 5 codec Firefox will play nice with, in addition to Ogg Theora. Both Mozilla and Opera have so far ignored H.264. Anyway, you can download it here!

Currently 2010 FIFA World Cup is on its way, football fans from the world over are getting ready to celebrate and are supporting their teams however they can. Anyone can sport a team’s official T-shirt, but now fans can show their allegiance in their browser as well.

Mozilla is introducing 32 new Persona themes for each of the participating countries at the final tournament. What’s more, it is also holding a world cup of its own, by encouraging fans to compete with each other – the country with the most Personas installed gets crowned as a champion in about a month’s time.

“Being in front of your computer doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the action, you can participate with the Firefox Cup. By wearing one of these 32 Personas to support your team, you’ll take part in the global Firefox Cup competition,” the announcement also read.

The themes, as it is to be expected from these official Personas, look polished enough and don’t render the buttons and other elements hard to make out like some Personas do. They’re all pretty similar, featuring plenty of green from the football pitch and the country flag in the right corner.

The Firefox Cup competition is already underway. Fans of each team can battle it out to show that they’re the greatest supporters. Already, plenty of people have pitched in and an early ranking took shape. Argentina has taken the lead so far with over 1,200 people ‘wearing’ its Persona, but, just like in the real competition, Brazil is putting up a good fight and is not far behind, with 900 installs. The first round of the competition closes on June 16th and the final winner will be announced on July 14th.

WordPress support PuSH

Enter PubSubHubbub (PuSH), an open protocol that is designed to get a feed to subscribers as fast as possible, in terms of seconds. The protocol has been gaining support and WordPress.com has just announced that it has enabled it for all 10.5 million blogs it hosts, a huge step forward for PuSH.

What it means is that feed subscribers to any of the blogs hosted by WordPress.com will get notified instantly when their favorite blogs post something new, if they use a feed reader that supports PuSH, like Google Reader, anyway. The new feature is already live, so WordPress.com users are already taking advantage of it. If you’re hosting your own blog using WordPress software, you can install the new PuSHPress plugin to get access to the same functionality.

PuSH is a real-time web protocol designed to completely revamp the way feeds get published. Until now, feed clients would ping a blog or a site every so often to see if there is anything new. This introduced a noticeable lag between the time an article would be published and the time it landed in people’s feed readers, sometimes even hours. PuSH changes things over. Both the publisher and the reader connect to a central hub. When a new piece is published, the hub is notified immediately. The hub server then notifies all the subscribers that there’s something new and the entire process usually doesn’t take more than a few seconds.

Security Issues with Twitter

If you can notice at the past days Twitter is getting a lot of problems with their site, so what they did is they started tapping into Google’s Safe Browsing API in order to detect and block URLs pointing to malicious websites. Security experts applaud the initiative, even though the new feature is still buggy and can be easily bypassed. It looks like the flood of security threats that Twitter users have faced this year has prompted the administration of the micro-blogging platform to take a more proactive approach at security.

Chief security expert Costin Raiu at antivirus vendor Kaspersky, suggests that Twitter is using the Google Safe Browsing API in order to determine the nature of URLs. Surely, it won’t catch everything but definitively a step forward. The implementation still has some serious imperfections, one of which being the inability to verify links generated with popular URL shorteners. This is a significant problem because of the 140-character restriction, URL shortening is the most widely used method of posting links on Twitter.

There are also issue that detection can be bypassed by stripping the www from a malicious URL or leaving it with http:// only. Nevertheless, several security experts have applauded the initiative and are sure that the service will be tweaked in time. Some of them have recommended a similar approach for other social-networking websites. Maybe, in time, Twitter will decide to tap into other blacklists as well, such as the phishing URLs one maintained at PhishTank. This service, which is operated by OpenDNS, also offers a free API for developers.
